I read the whole book through over a few days, never finding it dull or daft, and where science was involved it was easily understood. She pointed out it was although interesting tainted by the anthropomorphism within it, and I smiled and wrote back that it sounded like a decent book for druids.
![]() Rick Veitch is incredibly smart-I remember reading his follow-up comics to Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing run and feeling bad for him, a sense that changed to being deeply impressed by the depth of Veitch’s thinking about the series and his ability to use the conceit Moore introduced in “The Anatomy Lesson”-essentially, a shell that can be animated by a lot of different thematic concerns-to explore his own interests.I have no idea what books #2 and #3 might be. The back cover lists Maximortal as #1 and Bratpack as #4 in the “Heroica” line of books. Like Bratpack, this book is a deconstruction of comics tropes Bratpack worked on ten sidekicks, and this book goes hard at the Superman character, as a character, a cultural force, and as a publishing and creative phenomenon. ![]() ![]() ![]() Maybe that’s why it sat in a box for five years without me reading it. Once she’s back, she’s “unprepared for the lecherous reaction her lush sensuality provokes” because of the toiling country life she’s used to. As Sara adjusts, the team prepares for their first mission in Paris, France, even as Mother is working hard to find his two kids lost as a consequence of a previous mission. On the team are five kids: a Black boy named Paris, a girl named Sydney, Brooklyn (formerly called Sara), a boy named Rio, and a girl named Kat (for a city in Nepal). The kids get codenames (they’re basically renamed) to match their city of origin. Mother somehow wins and Sara gets released only to join a team of kid spies operating out of a base in Scotland. After getting arrested for hacking into the NYC foster care system to expose her foster parents as criminals, she meets a man named Mother who is not a lawyer but convinces her to take on her case. Twelve-year old Sara Martinez is a hacker bouncing from foster home to foster home in Brooklyn, New York. ![]() ![]() Thankfully, this was a fun mix of both relationships and mystery (although definitely more mystery than relationships). And what little we knew about her was recently retconned, at the same time as she was also Nerfed. I like comics that pay attention to continuity, recognizing the historical significance of earlier Defenders teams.īut, I don't really care for this particular cast. I like superheroes with legit powers, and who aren't just powerless street toughs in costume. And even without the universe seemingly, the cosmic being Eternity pretending to be a residual spell from Doctor Strange meant to band together a new team of Defenders, Blue Marvel was perfectly capable of traveling to places outside of the universe with his room full of portals. I found myself Marvel-ing about how blasé all these characters were about the universe pulling them together to be a team against their will. Blue Marvel seems sensible, so I like having a steady head as the person saying, "We can't save the multiverse as long as we're inside it!" Or, you know. On the one hand, this read like exactly the kind of comic I would want to read. 3.5, and I'm still on the fence about it. ![]() |
