Images from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory show the sun at solar minimum in December 2019 and the solar maximum in April 2014. The weakest on record has produced less than 100 sunspots and the strongest nearly 300. This peak intensity will place this cycle at about the average compared to the historical record, reports. The cycle, the team of researchers thinks, will reach about 185 monthly sunspots during its maximum and thus be somewhat milder than what the team originally forecasted. While official predictions by NASA and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) say that the sun will reach the peak of its activity in 2025, new research led by NASA research scientist Robert Leamon and Scott McIntosh, the deputy director at US National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), suggests this might happen next year.Īccording to the finalised forecast, the current cycle is expected to reach its peak in 2024. This video from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory shows the Sun over the past week, including some especially dynamic activity about 20 seconds in. Happy #SunDay! This week’s space weather report includes 3 notable solar flares, 23 coronal mass ejections, and 1 geomagnetic storm.
